** For Mac users !! After returning "failed" drives, I could not solve the problem through an online procedure and it was called customer help to find out why it works for my Mac! Apparently, the solution was very simple, but I did not see this easy solution online in the forum I found. The problem of deletion/formatting for a Mac is to be done only with the view opened in the disk utility. Make sure you show all the devices and then go to "delete" the top level drive. Problem solve.
Thank you, Amador, by sharing how it is formatted for the current Mac. Here's a little-updated version of its instructions:
Open Disk Utility.
From the View menu, select "Show all devices".
Right-click and select "Delete" from the pop-up menu.
Create a name and select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" You seem to have the current aspect of OS-X.
It will be renovated in about a minute.

I followed these guidelines, and it was easy. I'm using it as a time machine backup disk. I plug in a USB hub which is connected to my computer on my computer. From the review, I have noticed that some people have a disk failure, but I also make a cloud-based backup. But that's just backing up my recent version of each file. Time Machine gives me a backup of backup for the past 24 hours so I can recover something overwritten inappropriately.
